The scope of work for this project included the inspection and plan preparation for the rehabilitation dual tangent bridges carrying IL-50 (Cicero Avenue) over the Belt Railway of Chicago (BRC)railyard. The superstructure consists of nine(northbound) and ten (southbound) spans of continuous Precast Prestressed Concrete (PPC) I beams supported on multi-column concrete piers and stub abutments. The project consists of preparation of the Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E) for the proposed improvements. The proposed improvements include bridge deck latex concrete overlay, replacement of seven expansion joints, guardrail to bridge connections upgrades, superstructure and substructure concrete repairs, PPC I beam concrete repairs, protective shielding for the railroad. In addition to the structure repairs, portions of the guardrail, sidewalks, curb and gutter were replaced as well as the removal and replacement of the median north and south of bridges to accommodate traffic crossovers during construction. Scope of work also included bridge inspections utilizing a boom truck and coordinating the inspection with BRC railroad to obtain Railroad Entry permits.
As the prime consultant, Garza Karhoff Engineering served as the Engineer of Record for the design and development of the roadway and structural plans for the repairs and improvements made to the bridges (structure number SN 016-2512 and SN 016-2513) and of the staging and proposed roadway plans.
