The St. Bernard Medical Office Building and Ambulatory Care Center is a new three-story, 72,000 sq. ft. building in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois.
The building is a component of an updated Planned Development located on the St. Bernard Hospital campus and will house outpatient services, including diagnostics, general radiology, MRI, mammography and ultrasound, cardiac testing, a walk-in clinic, lab, orthopedics, and physical/occupational therapy. The building will also have offices for more than 20 physician practices.
Garza Karhoff Engineering is the Structural Engineer of Record for the St. Bernard Medical Office Building and was responsible for the entire structural design of the building and drawing production in Revit for this design-build project. Additional responsibilities included developing specifications and contract documents along with providing construction administration for the project. The building consists of a steel braced-frame structure with floors of composite steel beams supporting concrete topping on composite steel deck. The roof structure consists of composite steel beams and composite steel deck with concrete topping supporting two large air-handling units with a screen wall around and a green roof outside the mechanical area being supported by steel joists/steel girders and a conventional steel deck roof. The building columns and exterior walls are supported on concrete spread and strip footings. The shell of the building consists of precast concrete, metal panel and tinted glass which complement the materials of the original 1904 building on the hospital campus while creating a new and modern gateway for the campus.
